Working with Miss Rhode Island and Day One of NYFW

Miss Rhode Island Ali is wearing a crown as she sits at a vanity mirror smiling. She is holding a color palette for a color analysis session.

I can’t believe that these two things are happening in the same week!

Right now, I'm on the train heading to New York. So much is going on that I decided to create a post journaling some of the highlights.

Ana smiles warmly in a selfie taken on a train. She is wearing a black blazer over a bright yellow shirt and accessorized with large silver hoop earrings and a silver heart-shaped necklace.

I’m still pinching myself that I’m heading to Fashion Week once again.

For the past three years, I’ve been part of the New York Fashion Tour group, studying and working. This year, I am flying solo, working backstage and doing my own fashion research.

Working with Ali - Miss Rhode Island 2024

This Thursday, September 5th, I finally met Ali in person. Working with her was such an honor!

Ali is full of love and compassion. She’s as sweet as she is beautiful, inside and out. Her eyes lit up when she spoke about her work with children undergoing cancer treatment, which really touched me.

Miss Rhode Island glows in bright and light colors, with a warm, neutral temperature profile. She’s a gorgeous Bright Spring!

She has a unique style, and her personality is just as bright as her color palette.

NYFW Begins!

It’s 8 PM, and I’ve just arrived in New York. I met up with Melissa, my partner for this fashion week. We had an amazing homemade vegetarian risotto that she made for dinner. Tomorrow, we’ll be working backstage for the first day!

New York at night – NYFW night one

Saturday, the 7th: Backstage at SIMKHAI

Today, I worked backstage at the SIMKHAI show. And what a show! The brand is incredible, super organized, and the collection was an absolute dream.

About SIMKHAI

SIMKHAI designs for the elevated everyday, with innovative techniques and timeless craftsmanship.

Founded in 2010 by designer JONATHAN SIMKHAI, the studio takes inspiration from architects and sculptors, blending progressive construction techniques with intimate hand-detailing to create truly special garments and lifestyle design.

A 2015 winner of the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, the studio has earned recognition for its original silhouettes, quality construction, and timeless elegance.

SIMKHAI continues to nurture an inspired creative community around the brand’s home in Los Angeles, sharing their designs and stories with women around the world who live artful, unapologetic lives.

Jonathan Simkhai honed his technical skills at Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology before launching his first womenswear line in New York City. An early inductee to the CFDA Incubator program, he quickly developed an eye for craft and quality. Today he leads the brand’s creative studio, drawing inspiration from his travels and the cities he and his husband call home.
