Packing Smart for a Short Trip

Traveling light without sacrificing style and authenticity is an art, and for our recent short trip to New York City, I challenged myself to pack efficiently and repeat pieces while creating versatile looks. With just 11 pieces of clothing (including shoes!), I managed to build five outfits for three days.

I packed for both me and Brendon, and his only requests were to travel in sweatpants for comfort, and to bring his favorite denim jacket. So I used these two items as the foundation for multiple outfits.

Travel Day: My Oversized Blazer Trick

For our travel day, I opted for my trusty oversized blazer. Not only is it comfortable for the journey, but it also spares me from packing it, keeping it wrinkle-free. This is a tip I always recommend: wear your bulkier pieces to save space in your suitcase.

Fun fact: After nearly missing a train on a previous trip, we left extra early this time and had more than enough time to relax at the station.

We arrived in New York around 2 pm, just in time for check-in at the hotel and a quick change for dinner. The highlight of the evening? Tickets to Wicked on Broadway, a play that left me reflecting on its powerful themes of acceptance and identity.

What I Packed: 11 Pieces, 5 Outfits

Here’s a breakdown of what I packed and how I styled the same pieces in different ways to maximize my wardrobe without overpacking. Repeating pieces is key, but it’s all about how you mix and match:

What I packed: A curated 11-piece selection featuring versatile items.

Travel look: Comfy pants, oversized blazer, and chunky sandals.

White denim, dazzled tank, blazer and flat point toe shoes.

  • Day 2: Anniversary Celebrations

Our second day was special. Our wedding anniversary!

We spent the morning at the Summit Vanderbilt.

I wore a garçon classic shirt, white pants, blazer and, to make it fun, red converse shoes.

  • Dinner

In the evening, we enjoyed a beautiful dinner at a stylish restaurant. Brendon picked the place, he was all about it. :)

I wore a silk skirt, cashmere top and my winner navy blazer!

I have to say that the accessories was what really leveled up that look. You should never underestimate what good accessories can do for you!

I also spent some time window shopping on Fifth Avenue and noticed a lot of earthy tones like creams, camels, and browns dominating the fall trends. I even treated myself to a new accessory and a new top. Adding just one piece can refresh your entire look!

  • Day 3: My friends Birthday Brunch and the Perfect Farewell

On our last day, I visited a friend for her birthday brunch. I wore the dress shirt. Later, Brendon and I made one last stop at Chaotic Good Café, a must-visit spot for board game lovers on the Upper East Side and that was our final stroll around the city.

Key Takeaway: Pack Less, Wear More

This trip reinforced how important it is to focus on versatile pieces that can be styled differently across multiple occasions. I used every piece I packed multiple times, proving that you don’t need to overpack to have great outfits. Think layers, neutrals, and key accessories that transform the same items into fresh looks.

Next time you're packing for a short trip, challenge yourself to pack fewer items and repeat pieces smartly! Not only will you avoid the discomfort of lugging around too much, but being organized and prepared will also give you more room to relax and enjoy the fun.
